Couchiching First Nation is seeking a permanent full-time NNADAP Mental Health and Addictions Worker to join their Health department. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of mental health expertise, trauma-informed care experience, and a deep understanding of Anishinaabe culture and beliefs.
Job Position Overview:
Reporting directly to the Health Manager, the Mental Health and Addictions Worker is responsible for prevention, promotion, treatment, and harm reduction related to mental health, substance use, and alcohol-related situations. This role provides ongoing support while working collaboratively with individuals to develop personalized treatment plans, facilitate access to resources, and promote recovery and well-being.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients’ mental health and substance use issuesto identify needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Provide individual, family, and group counseling to address various mental health and addiction challenges, utilizing evidence-based practices.
- Assess and manage crisis situations effectively, employing strategies that recognize the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction issues.
- Implement harm reduction strategies and educate clients on safe substance use practices.
- Monitor and evaluate client progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary and maintaining accurate case documentation.
- Develop and implement community-based programs to promote mental health awareness, foster understanding, reduce stigma, and prevent substance abuse.
- Collaborate with health service providers, community organizations, and other partners.
- Act in a professional manner during work hours and after work hours, presenting as a positive role model for all clients.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Post secondary degree or diploma in Psychology or Social work, or a related field.
- Minimum five years’ experience in mental health and addictions field.
- Experience providing counseling to individuals and families addressing various mental health and addiction challenges.
- Strong understanding of mental health and addiction treatment models and best practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of trauma-informed care principles and practices.
- Ability to manage crises and post-crises situations effectively.
- Knowledge of Anishinaabe, culture, traditions and beliefs is essential.
- Ability to speak Ojibway or a willingness to learn the language is considered an asset.
- Commitment to maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
- Excellent interpersonal abilities with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with computers with the ability to learn new software.
