Job Description

OOFN is seeking a passionate Community Child and Family Advocacy Worker to serve the OOFN community. The role of the family advocate is to achieve successful outcomes for the First Nation through a collaborative approach between Government agencies, Child & Family services, Health services, Jordan’s Principle, and other organizations and resources for children and families, and the OOFN, and our programs and services.

Schedule: 35 hours per week
Job Type: 1-year contract (with possibility of permanency)

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and support to families in resolving issues with Child & Family services, ensuring the best interests of children and families.
  • Further, advocate for families, connect them with wellness support services. Help develop culturally relevant services to ensure the safety and well-being of OOFN children and families.
  • Additionally, collaborate with OOFN Programs, Indigenous Elders, and community members to offer outreach services as well as coordinate peer support programs.
  • Consistently, maintain statistics, participate in team planning and quality improvement, and uphold confidentiality with OOFN clients.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities along with an understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and issues.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills especially those grounded in the principles of cultural safety and humility.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of regulations and compliance requirements related to mental health and social services. At the same time, be mindful of the unique jurisdictional and governance structures of Indigenous communities.
  • Strong understanding of mental health issues as well as crisis intervention and case management skills.
  • Moreover, proven ability in counseling, group facilitation, advocacy, and crisis prevention.
  • Deep connection to Indigenous culture and practices, while also serving as a positive role model and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Ability to speak Ojibway is an asset.
Qualifications
  • Degree or Diploma in Social Services, or combination of education and experience.
  • Two years in a related field working with Indigenous children, youth, and parents in a human services capacity.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check is a condition of employment.
  • Successful completion of a 3-month probationary period.
