Couchiching First Nation is seeking a dedicated Child in Care Worker for a full-time position within our Child and Family Care team. In this role, you will provide critical services to children entering care, ensuring their well-being and safety. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in social work with experience working in indigenous communities as well as providing case management and counselling. Job Position Overview:

The Child in Care Worker reports directly to the Child and Family Care Supervisor. This role works with the Child and Family Care team to support and advocate for the emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of children in our community. The Child in Care Worker acts as primary worker for children, and is responsible for providing case management, coordinating services and resources, and offering support to children’s caregivers and families. It is essential that the individual performs this role with respect for the culture, values, and traditions of Couchiching First Nation, and acts as a positive role model within the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for children’s access to culturally appropriate services and ensure their emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
  • Act as the Child’s Primary Worker for protection and family support cases.
  • Follow up on referrals for children in care, including those placed under Customary Care Agreements.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to caregivers and families.
  • Support children and families during court proceedings
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all case documentation and reports.
  • Coordinate and monitor services provided by external agencies and community resources.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop community-based programs and training for children, youth, and families.
  • Provide on-call duties as needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or other related field, or equivalent.
  • Experience in case management and brief counselling for children, youth, and families.
  • Experience in service planning and budget management.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, and councils.
  • Experience developing, organizing, and delivering community presentations.
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth & Family Services Act with a strong understanding of Part X, Customary Care Declaration and Procedures.
  • Knowledge of Couchiching First Nation Customs and Traditions, Weechi-It-Te-Win family services and the Treaty 3 Childcare law Abinoojii Inakonigewin.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting Anishinabek children and families.
  • Understanding of human behavior theories and the ability to apply them in assessments and planning.
  • Familiarity with risk assessments, child abuse standards, and child welfare legislation.
  • Commitment to maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Strong collaboration skills within teams and with service providers.
  • Excellent planning, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines and commitments.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak Ojibway or a willingness to learn the language is considered an asset
  • First Aid/CPR Certification or willingness to be certified.
  • Ability to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid G driver’s license, have a vehicle and be willing to travel when required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
