Job Summary

We are committed to being trauma-informed using education, training, screening, navigation, and referrals. The agency puts this knowledge into practice with youth, families, and staff as well as with our community partners. Our staff meaningfully support young people and their families. The Youth Worker positions are responsible for the direct care and supervision of youth who are placed in our open custody & detention facilities, and provide them with a living environment that is safe, stable and emotionally supportive. Staff are required to perform a variety of security functions to ensure the care and supervision of youth while also ensuring the safety of the centre, staff and the public.

Qualifications
  • PREFERRED: Child and Youth Worker Diploma from an accredited College or University
  • Consideration for candidates with the following qualifications, where the person has significant related experience: H.B.S.W., B.S.W., B.A. Sociology or Psychology, Onajigawin Indigenous Services Diploma, Social Services Worker Diploma, Developmental Service Worker Diploma.
Skills
  • Applicants must have an awareness of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability in the following:
    • Above average verbal skills;
    • Ability to confront youth in a consistent and constructive manner;
    • Above average interpersonal skills;
    • Also, ability to control and stimulate groups of adolescents
Abilities
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Drivers License and current First Aid Certificate;
  • Provide a Vulnerable Sector Police Check;
  • Applicants must be able to work shift work;
  • Further, applicants must successfully complete Crisis Intervention training and perform physical intervention skills;
  • Lastly, demonstrated ability to perform a variety of security functions

Salary As per Collective Agreement(s)

CUPE (in Thunder Bay) range ($29.64/hour to $35.98/hour)
