The Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General is hiring Correctional Officers across Ontario, advertised on the Northern Peak HR Consulting job board. This Correctional Officer position involves maintaining the care, custody, control and supervision of inmates in correctional centres, detention centres and jails while supporting facility safety, rehabilitation programs, cultural activities and community escorts. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have completed Grade 12 or an equivalent credential, be able to obtain required First Aid, CPR and AED certification, and be available for rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends and statutory holidays. Successful applicants must also complete required testing, medical screening, security clearance and Correctional Officer training. Positions are available in locations throughout Ontario, including Thunder Bay, Kenora, Fort Frances and other Northern Ontario communities. The position offers wages of $32.15 to $32.79 per hour, and eligible Northern Ontario hires may qualify for financial incentives through the Northern Attraction Incentive Program. The Correctional Officer works with inmates in Ontario correctional centres, detention centres and jails. They ensure the security and custody of inmates and make sure inmates have what they need for a successful rehabilitation.

Successful applicants to positions at the Kenora Jail, Fort Frances Jail, Monteith Correctional Complex, Thunder Bay Correctional Centre and Thunder Bay Jail may qualify for financial compensation under the Northern Attraction Incentive Program (NAIP).

NAIP is a pilot recruitment program which offers financial incentives to new hires in specific positions in designated institutions and probation and parole offices in Northern Ontario, including external candidates to the Ontario Public Service and qualifying existing employees who agree to work for a term of three years.

Note: Hours for these positions are irregular and can vary from 0 up to 40 hours per week, with no guarantee of hours. Although hours are not guaranteed additional shifts are frequently available.


About the Job
In this role, you will:
  • Perform a full range of duties, including the care, custody, control and supervision of inmates
  • Support the delivery of specialized programs, services and cultural activities for inmates
  • Interact with inmates to maintain security and safety in the facility
  • Provide community escort duties to ensure the safety of inmates, staff, visitors and the public
  • Maintain communications with a range of contacts, including inmates, co-workers, supervisors, Native Inmate Liaison/Elder and clinical and medical staff
  • Lastly, demonstrate the Correctional Services Officer core competencies of critical and strategic thinking, leadership, communication, emotional intelligence and integrity, and professionalism throughout all interactions.


What you bring to the team

Mandatory Requirements
You must meet the following pre-requirements to apply:
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Likewise, possess oral French skills at the Advanced-Minus level (for bilingual positions)
  • Additionally, be currently certified and/or able to be certified by first day of employment in Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Heartsaver (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator(AED)
  • Must have original proof of Grade 12 completion or an equivalency (e.g. general equivalency diploma/certificate)
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, including days, afternoons and nights, and on weekends and statutory holidays

Eligibility
To be considered for the Correctional Officer position, you must successfully complete the following during the recruitment process:
  • Ministry administered aptitude, cognitive and psychological tests
  • FITCO testing [must be completed prior to a conditional offer of employment has been made]
  • Equally important, Correctional Officer pre-employment medical exam
  • In addition, Corrections Foundational Training for Correctional Officers (CFT-CO), as well as a training stipend will be offered to candidates who are selected.
  • Oral French Language test at the Advanced-Minus level (for bilingual correctional officer positions only)
  • Correctional Officer Enhanced Security Clearance process, which includes:
    • CPIC Check
    • Vulnerable Sector Check
    • Out-of-Country Check (if applicable)
    • RCMP Records Check
    • NICHE/RMS File Check
    • PIP (Police Information Portal) Check
    • Internet Search
    • Credit Equifax Check
    • Immigration Status Check
    • Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Check – last ten years
  • Prior to beginning employment with the Ontario Public Service, you must provide documents showing that you are legally entitled to work in Canada
