Position Summary:
Lac Seul First Nation is seeking a compassionate and committed Family Advocate – Community Based to join the Obishikokaang Sagatay Gamik (OSG) department. This position provides hands-on, culturally safe support to Lac Seul children, youth, and families navigating the child welfare system. The Family Advocate will deliver home-based support, advocacy, referrals, and case coordination to strengthen family well-being and reduce risk, while keeping children connected to family, culture, and community.
Hours: 35 hours per week
Salary: Starting at $27.94/hour based on qualifications and experience.
Job Duties (include but are not limited to):
- Firstly, provide on-reserve, community-based advocacy and family support.
- Build trust and strong relationships with children, youth, parents, and caregivers.
- Attend court hearings and case conferences to support family participation.
- Assist families in navigating child welfare processes, completing documents, and signing consent forms.
- Conduct home visits and assessments and identify family safety concerns.
- Make appropriate referrals to internal and external services, including schools, health, and housing.
- In addition, support families with file closure steps and after-care plans.
- Coordinate transportation and accompany families to appointments as required.
- Subsequently, assist with school attendance follow-up, records, and family wellness needs.
- Ensure accurate and timely data entry into the OSG Database.
- Prepare reports and progress updates for the Director.
- Collaborate with community partners, participate in outreach events, and support reunification efforts.
- Lastly, maintain confidentiality, cultural safety, and strong documentation practices.
Qualifications:
- Firstly, grade 12 (OSSD) or equivalent; a combination of education and experience is an asset
- Post-secondary education in social services, child and youth work, family services, or a related field is also preferred
- Equally important, 1–3 years of experience supporting children, youth, and families, preferably in a First Nations setting, is an asset
- Knowledge of child welfare processes and community-based advocacy
- Strong understanding of First Nations culture, values, and wellness practices
- Excellent communication, advocacy, and relationship-building skills
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Moreover, the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems
- Knowledge of the Ojibway language is an asset
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License and clean driving record
- Additionally, Clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends
- Lastly, must be legally entitled to work in Canada
