About the Job:

Join the Canadian Mental Health Association Team to become a Family Care Coordinator today! The Nurse Practitioner is responsible to provide initial and ongoing assessment, treatment and evaluation for clients referred to CMHA. Maintain patient care standards according to the College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice for Registered Nurses in the Extended Class.

Your Job Duties?
  • Firstly, perform initial mental health assessment of clients, documenting in health record
  • Subsequently, prescribe, monitor and evaluate medication in treatment
  • Also, order diagnostic testing for clients
  • Refers clients to psychiatry services, relaying all pertinent information from assessment
  • Develop, maintain and supervise psychopharmacologic and medical treatment and medication policies and procedures of Safe Bed program
  • Maintain accurate and timely records
  • Collaborate with consulting psychiatrist on appropriate treatment, advocating for the client, serving as primary liaison with psychiatry
  • Collaborate with primary practitioners in shared care philosophy
  • Provide education to staff as required
  • Attend OTN appointments as required for district clients
  • Furthermore, comply with Nurse Practitioner practice standards as outlined by College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Represents the Canadian Mental Health Association, Thunder Bay Branch, in a professional manner and adheres to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of the Association
  • Adhering to and promoting CMHA’s Code of Ethics Policy
  • Complying with CMHA’s Health and Safety Policies
  • Finally, other duties as assigned
What do you bring to the job?
  • Firstly, a Master of Nursing-Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP), Primary Health Nurse Practitioner (PHNCP), Master of Nursing/Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (MN/PHCNP), or related Nurse Practitioner Master’s Degree.
  • Secondly, current registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario for Nurse Practitioner in good standing
  • Similarly, up to date knowledge of psychiatric medications
  • Likewise, training, knowledge and experience working with clients who have psychiatric illness, with particular emphasis on psychosis and concurrent disorders
  • Knowledge of developmental issues and needs of young adults, their families, caregivers, and a sensitivity to the needs of indigenous clients
  • Good communication, engagement, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience, in integrating medical and recovery models of care with clients
  • Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively with, and knowledge of community resources, to support clients, families, caregivers, team members, hospital and community resources
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Windows Outlook and Word
  • Knowledge of screening tools used in psychiatric practice
  • Moreover, knowledge and comprehension of the Mental Health Act, Healthcare Consent Act, Child & Family Services Act. Substitute Decisions Act and Privacy legislation
  • Current Police Clearance Certificate required
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license, reliable vehicle and $2,000,000 vehicle liability insurance
  • Strong work ethic and emphatic to needs of clients with mental health issues
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Ability to speak French is considered an asset
